GENERAL RULES AND SUGGESTIONS

RACE NOTICES

1.         ALL RC PERSONNEL SHOULD CHECK OFFICIAL BULLETIN BOARD FOR RACE COURSE INFORMATION, AND ANY NOTICES OF CHANGES.

EQUIPMENT

1.         MAKE SURE RC BAG AND POLES ARE TAKEN FROM WINDLASSES LOCKER OUT TO RC BOAT.  OTHER PERSONS ARE RESPONSIBLE TO MAKE SURE ALL SCORE SHEETS AND EQUIPMENT ARE IN BAGS, BUT COMPETENT RC PERSONNEL NEVER LEAVE SHORE WITHOUT CHECKING BAG’S CONTENTS.

ABSENCE OF SAILORS

1.         WHEN OUT ON RACE COURSE AND START TIME IS NEAR, AND THE MAJORITY OF SAILORS IS MISSING; DETERMINE WHY.

            A.         ARE THERE FLAGS INDICATING PROBLEM ON SHORE FLAG POLE?

            B.         TRY TO CONTACT BY RADIO TO DETERMINE PROBLEM.

            C.         ASK SAILORS ON COURSE IF THEY KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.

            D.         HAS AIR DROPPED AND THAT IS WHY SAILORS CANNOT SAIL TO THE COURSE ON TIME?

E.         IF ALL FAILS TO DETERMINE PROBLEM, MAKE A JUDGMENT CALL AS TO STARTING THE RACE.  IT IS THE GENERAL POLICY OF WINDLASSES TO USE COMMON SENSE, AND NOT NECESSARILY NIT-PICK OVER TECHNICALITIES.

NO AIR

1.         ALWAYS ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION:  “IS THIS A FAIR RACE OR IS IT A DRIFTING CONTEST?”

2.         DO NOT START A RACE JUST BECAUSE YOU SEE A PATCH OF AIR SOMEWHERE.

3.         DO NOT FALL FOR SOMEONE SAYING THAT IT IS THE “LUCK OF RACING” IN LIGHT AIR.  IT IS NOT FAIR IF HALF THE FLEET DRIFTS AND CANNOT ATTEMPT TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

4.         BEFORE BEGINNING THE STARTING SEQUENCE, CONSIDER CHANGE OF COURSE.

A.         WHITE #1 OR #2 COURSE FLAG MAY SHORTEN THE COURSE ENOUGH SO A RACE CAN BE COMPETED WITHIN THE TIME LIMIT.

5.         IF AFTER STARTING RACE AND THE WIND DIES, CONSIDER ABANDONMENT (N FLAG – 3 SOUNDS).

TOO MUCH WIND

1.         BEFORE BEGINNING THE STARTING SEQUENCE, CONSIDER CHANGE OF COURSE WHEN CONDITIONS ARE VERY WINDY.

A.         WHITE #1 OR #2 COURSE FLAG HAS NO DOWNWIND LEG SO IT IS EASIER TO SAIL IN DIFFICULT CONDITIONS.

2.         ALWAYS ABANDON RACING IF WIND CONDITIONS BECOME DANGEROUS.

START LINE AND MARKS OF COURSE

1.         DO NOT HAVE PORT FAVORED LINE.

2.         PORT FAVORED LINES ARE DANGEROUS!

3.         IF IN DOUBT OF PORT FAVORED, ASK COORDINATOR OR ‘A’ FLEET SAILORS FOR ADVICE.

4.         DETERMINE IF RACE COURSE HAS BEEN SET, BEFORE STARTING SEQUENCE.

            A.         RACE SEQUENCE CAN START IF START LINE AND WINDWARD MARK IS SET.

POSTPONEMENT FLAG (AP FLAG)

1.         RAISE AP FLAG (2 SOUNDS) FOR ANY MISTAKES IN TIMING, FLAGS, DELAYS OF SCHEDULED START, ETC.
